My time in Paris gave me new vision and impetus to further my creative pursuits. In a city so beautiful and full of art, your course was vital in giving me direction, enabling me to select and compose suitable but challenging subjects. I am already applying my new skills back home.

Jennifer, from Pennsylvania, USA

Thank you so much for an inspiring week and fantastic holiday. I never knew painting could be so relaxing and enjoyable. Your guidance in choosing subjects and helpful suggestions for improving technique made the time so worth while.

OUTLINE OF THE WORKSHOPBack to Top

A great program ! We will paint in the most beautiful sites of Paris, each day in a different location. All the painting and drawing is done outdoors, en-plein-air, in the streets and parks of Paris. At the same time we chose our positions to be as comfortable and suitable for work as possible.

Average time of art classes : 5 hours a day (10-12.30 AM and 2.30-5 PM). Wednesday afternoon is free.

Example of daily schedule :

  • Meeting at 10, say at Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris)
  • Drawing or painting until 12.30 AM
  • Eating, possibly in a nearby restaurant, together or on your own : everyone is free to choose
  • Meeting at 2.30 PM on another spot in the vicinity, say St Louis Island
  • Painting until 5 PM
  • End of the course, but you can continue to paint on the spot if you want to

You will be provided with a detailed schedule including map of Paris, all daily painting spots and easiest transportation to them. No one got lost, ever.We will also indicate you the best restaurants.

The program has been carefully studied to take into account possible rain. We have reserved places inside where we can draw, chosen with care for their beautiful view of picturesque sites and monuments, or for their subject rich interiors such as certain churches or museums.

Workshop starts on Monday at 10 am and finishes on Saturday at 12.30 am. A certificate will be issued for each participant.

THE TEACHING

The number of students is limited to 10. Teaching is adapted to the level of each student, from absolute beginners to advanced.

PRIMARY AIM : Study of landscape and architecture in drawing, or watercolour ; learn to observe ; self-discovery through nature and creation ; work on observation and imagination ; three dimensional drawing ; atmosphere, values, tone, light, color.
Work performed in different media : pencil, charcoal, sanguine, pen and ink, pastel, watercolour or acrylics - according to your preference.
(Oils are not recommended for this workshop because they take too long to dry off. If you would like to paint with oils, please check the Workshop in a Château of the Loire Valley.)

SIDE BENEFITS : Enjoying a great vacation in pleasant company, discovering Paris.
Considering that students come from all over the world, the workshop is also a great cultural experience.

We have 25 years experience in teaching and organising painting workshops.

THE TEACHERBack to Top

Nicolas Petrescu-Alupi was born in Paris and has always lived there. He descends from a long line of artists : the son of Antonina Alupi and Cesar Petrescu, both exceptional painters and talented teachers, who have instructed and encouraged him from his earliest years. The family's artistic tradition extends back to his grandfather, Calin Alupi, one of the principal artists of Romanian Post-Impressionism.
Understandably Nicolas is proud of such a heritage and it is natural that, after having studied at the Fine Arts, he has chosen to pass on this inheritance by teaching art and painting.

N. Petrescu-Alupi, The Alley

Alongside these educational activities he pursues personal artistic reasearch and original studies - particularly in the field of landscape.

He will teach in English.

Nicolas Petrescu-Alupi with the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë

  C'est fantastique!
Paris was more stunning than the pictures suggest.
I'd recommend painting workshops to anybody wanting a relaxed and friendly introduction to the sites of this historic capital.
